Welcome to the official Lancashire Squash and Racketball Association website
If you’re looking for a great way to get fit, meet new people, and have fun, squash and racketball could be the sports for you. To get started all you need is a ball, a racket, and a wall.
Squash is played by more than 500,000 people in England every month from the elite players like Britain’s World No.1 Nick Matthew all the way down to the thousands who take part in local leagues and fun events.
Racketball is a more recent development and is very similar to squash, but is played with a slightly larger racket and a bigger, bouncier ball, making it easy to hit and get a rally going. This still ensures a good workout for both players and is an ideal way to start if you have never picked up a racket before.
So now we’ve got your attention where do you start? Do you have to join a club? No, is the short answer. The best place to start is at your local leisure centre where they have courts to hire (and often rackets too) and trained and helpful coaches to get you up and running (literally).

Dear Squash/Racketball Player
Active People Survey
We are all bombarded with direct marketing calls these days, which can be pretty infuriating for most people and I know often result in phones being put down quickly. I’d like to alert you to one call that you might receive which relates to sports participation and squash/racketball – and in which your involvement would be much appreciated.
The Active People Survey is a large scale sports participation survey which is funded by Sport England. It covers all the local authority areas in England and reaches about 165,000 respondents. It’s carried out on a continual basis by Sport England’s contracted research company – TNS – using landline phone interviews, and the results are collated to provide detailed information about 16+ participation in sport. What’s crucial for squash and racketball is that it the Active People Survey also greatly influences Sport England in their funding decisions about sport. We want to continue demonstrating that squash and racketball are genuine mass participation sports - so the more squash and racketball playing respondents there are in the survey, the better.
You will find out very quickly what the call is about. It will begin like this:
“Good afternoon/evening. My name is XXXXX calling on behalf of TNS – the independent research organisation. We are carrying out an important survey about people’s leisure and recreational activities. It will be used to help shape local services in the future. May I ask you a few questions?”
If you get such a call – and of course are happy to contribute to the survey, please do so. It can only help in developing a broader picture of our sports, as well as creating a positive influence in the minds of a critical funding agency.
