Last year Leyland Leisure Centre became the first squash club in the Preston, Chorley and South Ribble area to enter a ‘Junior’ Squash Team in the East Lancs Adult Summer Squash League.

Despite finishing bottom of League 2 and losing all their matches, the boys learned a great deal and their match play improved immeasurably; so much so, that when I asked them whether they wanted to play again this summer, they responded with a resounding Yes!

As well as the youngsters who played last summer we have drafted in another three boys into the squad making a total of eight boys, and next year, we may have a couple of girls ready to play in the team.

Not only are they looking forward to playing in the league again, but hopefully, with the experience gained from last summer, defeating some of their ‘adult’ opponents.

However, as with any sport, unless you have a sound foundation from which to develop, nothing happens.

And as somebody who has coached a number of sports, I know that these foundations are laid by providing sporting opportunities for youngsters during their school years, especially while at primary school.

At Leyland Leisure we start with our ‘mini squash’ courses in our local primary schools, and then develop and nurture the youngsters in our weekly classes held at the Leisure Centre.

All of the youngsters are coached by Dave Scurlock, Head Coach and Director of Youth Development at Lancashire Squash and Racketball, and myself.

Finally, I would like to thank once again the people and organisations that support our youngsters, in particular: Leyland Fox Lane Sports Club for providing food for us after the matches, and Lloyds TSB Bank for sponsoring the team’s  T-Shirts.
