One of our aims at Leyland Leisure Centre is to give girls in the local community the opportunity of playing squash and racketball, something very few of them have the chance to experience whilst at school.

Last year we applied for funding to Sport England, via the Lancashire Sport Partnership, to develop and promote racketball for girls, and were successful. It provided us with the necessary support to run two six-week courses for girls from some of the local High Schools in Leyland. Due its success we are applying for more funding.

Furthermore, due to the great support we have received from schools, parents and the girls, we have set up an ‘After School Club’ on Mondays, and have included a session in our Saturday Club.

Having established a sound platform to work from, and being a big supporter of local charities, we held our first ever ‘Girls Racketball Charity Event’ for the charity I am now supporting, ‘MILES of SMILES’, on Sunday 20th April.

Despite it being held over the Easter holidays we had six girls taking part in a fun competition, and we managed to raise £200.

My thanks to Paul Heathcote for sponsoring the event along with the other two events we held over Easter; a ‘Racketball Handicap Event’ and a ‘Squash Handicap Event’.

If you would like your girls to develop new skills, get fit, and have a lot of fun, come along and have a go at racketball; you might want to pick up a racket too!
