LEP - Leyland Lions Junior Squash & Racketball Club CLUBMARK Aug 2014

By John Gibson

Leyland Lions Junior Squash & Racketball Club at Leyland Leisure Centre have just been rewarded their England Squash & Racketball (ES&R) Bronze Club Charter in recognition of its development work.

Angela Cwaczko, the  ES&R North West Regional Manager, came down on Friday to present the award to us and,   despite it being the school holidays, we managed to get some of our kids down for the photo session.

The ES&R Club Charter, incorporating Sport England’s “Clubmark” is one of sports most exciting initiatives providing opportunities to develop clubs, coaches, volunteers and players.

Club Charter sets out core and common criteria for squash and racketball clubs to meet in the following categories – Duty Of Care and Child Protection, Coaching and Competition, and Club Management.

At Leyland our National Coaching Scheme starts with Minisquash for 5-11 year olds at Primary Schools. Mini Squash offers an ideal introduction for 5 to 11 year olds to the sport.  It helps the children to improve their coordination skills, learn some great new skills, but most importantly, have lots of fun.

Some of our Minisquash Success Stories:

One of our boys, who started with us as a nine year old back in 2004, is now playing squash for England Under 19’s. Another is playing for Lancashire Under 17’s and started with us as a 7 year old.  Our latest success story – a 7-year-old girl who started with us as a 5 year old, was recently selected to represent Lancashire at the North West Inter Counties Under 11’s Squash Championships.  Last year we entered a junior squash team in the East Lancs Adult Summer Squash League; the first time any junior club had done so since it was established twenty years ago and we have entered a team again this summer.  Three of the boys started in minisquash, and the team now includes a 12-year-old girl!

We also set up racketball for girls aged 11-15 years last year. Racketball is much easier to start with. It’s played with a bigger racket, a bigger and bouncier ball and is a lot of fun.

Our success would not have been possible without the great support the coaches, Dave Scurlock  and myself, get from parents, and staff at Leyland Leisure Centre.

Leyland Lions is the “HUB Club” for junior squash and racketball in the local communities of Preston, Chorley and South Ribble and is T-Shirt sponsored by Lloyds Bank.
