Lancashire Junior News

What a start to the year it has been for Lancashire juniors. Lancashire under 13 girls reached the finals of the Inter Counties for the second year in a row: congratulations to Saran Nghiem, Lucy Gibson and Charlie McCrone. They were helped on their way by a video message from the number 1 player in the world, Laura Massaro. It’s not often you get a personal message from such a great player, thanks Laura.

We did very well in the Junior Regionals, most teams containing a majority of Lancashire players. Notable results: Boys U17 came 3rd; Boys U13 came 2nd; Girls U13 came 5th. This is one of the toughest and biggest team events of the year, so well done to all who took part.

We have also had the Manchester Open Squash Event: I would like to congratulate the following Lancashire players who finished in the top 3 places Boys U11, 2nd Miles Maguire, Girls U11, 2nd Rowan Rutherford and 3rd Edie Broster . Boys, U13, 1st Finnlay Withington, Girls U15, 1st, Saran Nghiem, 3rd Marialena Lacovides. Boys U17 2nd Callum Brocklehurst.

Congratulations to the following juniors who are in the top 20 of the England rankings: Laurence Cull (top ten) Oscar Beach, Carlton Oldham, Isaac Rawcliffe, Charlie McCrone and Saran Nghiem (top 5). These are great achievements, especially as we have many other players knocking on the door of the top twenty. All players participating in England Squash sanctioned events (Lancashire Closed, Fairways Open) are eligible to appear on the national rankings. If you would like to be included email England Squash at rankings@englandsquash.com stating your name, county and list the events or event that you have competed in. If you have any news stories or photographs, please send them to me and we’ll put them up on the website.

Finally, it is with great sadness that we have to report the death of Glen Ragou one of our most popular coaches and characters, Glen you will be missed.

Other news: Manchester, now have a new coach in charge: Josh Taylor. Josh has a real hands-on policy whether it’s getting youngsters at the grassroots level or juniors training in Manchester Academy, a real breath of fresh air. Josh is really getting more juniors playing and is organizing the whole set up—making a great impression on youngsters and parents as well as forging a great relationship with Lancashire.

Don’t forget the next training session at Fairways Lodge on Sunday 28 February 10am till 1 pm. If you haven’t been before it’s a chance to meet like-minded juniors who like playing and having fun.

Yours,

Peter Withington
