Squash Girls Can At Leyland Leisure By John Gibson

Our aim at Leyland since setting up the club back in 2004 has always been to give youngsters whilst at school, especially girls, the opportunity of experiencing their first taste of the sport!

Squash is one of fittest and healthiest sports played in the UK. Thanks to Parents, Schools and many Organisations and Companies we have become the most successful Junior Squash & Racketball Club in the local communities in Preston, Chorley and South Ribble.

As someone who has worked in sport nationally with England Squash and British Tennis I believe youngsters whilst at school should try as many sports as possible before leaving school. It’s never too late to try a new sport!

Well, a great opportunity for girls to try the sport has been pulled together by England Squash our Governing Body.

It’s called “Squash Girls Can”. We are holding a six week course at Leyland Leisure Centre. It starts on Saturday 13th February and runs through to Saturday 19th March. Session timings: Midday – 12.40pm. All sessions are FREE!

Quote from Mark Williams, Director of Participation at England Squash, “We have worked with Sport England, the Squash and Racketball Foundation and County Sports Partnerships to run 33 Squash Girls Can projects nationwide. This is an exciting opportunity to get more women and girls playing regularly, at present women make up approximately 20% of regular participants in squash and racketball. Sport England’s ‘This Girl Can’ campaign has been incredibly successful and we hope to draw from this success with Squash Girls Can. We hope that the campaign will increase the appetite for squash and racketball amongst women and girls and inspire others around the country to run their own Squash Girls Can events.”

At Leyland we have many youngsters, girls and boys, who prior to starting with us had never played the sport who have gone on to represent Lancashire at junior level, one of our boys for England. I will highlight the case of a young girl. She was 5 years old when she started with us in Minisquash which is for Primary School children. Now 8 years old she plays squash for Lancashire Under 14’s!

Never played the sport before, want to come down and have a go, well here’s your opportunity!

• Age Group – 11 to 14 years (High School pupils)

On Sunday 20th September 2015 10 girls took part in our first ever Girls Racketball Event at Leyland for HEARTBEAT!

It’s the first time that a Junior Squash & Racketball Club in Lancashire has held such an event and that is due to the great support we have received from local High Schools, especially Balshaws C of E High School and Lostock Academy, via the sportivate funding we have received via Lancashire Sport Partnership.

Lloyds Bank of Fishergate Preston provided prizes for the girls, Leyland Leisure Centre gave us the courts free for the event, and two of the parents helped me with the scoring – Thank you.

All the girls are members of our Leyland Lions Junior Squash & Racketball Club.

Despite some of our girls not being available they managed to raise £50.

Thanks everybody!

“Leyland Lions Junior Squash & Racketball Club” at Leyland Leisure Centre has become the first Junior Club in Lancashire to set up Internal leagues for girls racketball.

This is due to the tremendous support we have received from local High Schools, especially Balshaws C of E High School in Leyland, following Sportivate applications submitted to Lancashire Sport Partnership over the past two years for 11-13 year olds.

Racketball is the fastest growing racket sport in the UK!

It’s all part of a project John Gibson and his fellow coach Dave Scurlock, who is the National Over 65 Racketball Champion, are working on to give girls whilst at High School opportunities to play a great and active sport!

Our aim at Leyland is simple. Give girls in the local community the opportunity of experiencing their first taste of the sport which the majority of them don’t experience whilst at High School.

Two of the girls who attended a Racketball course twelve months ago now attend monthly Lancashire Junior Squash Coaching sessions in Manchester!

Read any papers nowadays and what do you read – Health Problems! You only have to walk down any High Street in England nowadays to see it!

Quote from one of the pupils who recently started playing “I never played racketball before but intend to now. I have really enjoyed learning a new and active sport”.

Quote from Lauren Selby England’s No 1 Ranked Racketball Player, “I have been playing racketball seriously since I was a teenager and I am so grateful that I was introduced to such a fantastic sport. I am confident that once  girls step onto the court and get the bug for chasing that bouncy ball, they will never turn back”.

As John says “Racketball like Squash helps children improve their fitness and coordination skills, but most importantly, have lots of FUN”.

CALLING ALL GIRLS! Interested in coming along to our “After School Club” on Mondays? Then please ask your parents to email me.
