Free Introduction To Minisquash (5-10 year olds), Squash and Girls Racketball At Leyland Leisure

Calling all kids in the local communities of Preston, Chorley and South Ribble!
During September and October we are giving children in the local community an opportunity of coming along to our weekly sessions and trying it!

The session is FREE.

Squash and Racketball are some of the fittest, active and healthiest sports played today.
As somebody who has played many sports, Football and Cricket at a high level, I believe it's important that children whilst at school should try as many sports as possible, and most importantly, have lots of FUN and ENJOYMENT!

A one mile fun run in aid of the Preston-based charity Heartbeat raised £1,600. It was held on the squash courts at Leyland Leisure Centre.
The event was organised by fundraiser John Gibson. He said: “A big thank you to Chris Napier from Costa Coffee for sponsoring the event, Helen Clitheroe the GB Runner, Leyland Leisure Centre for giving me the courts free for the event, all the children and adults who took part, and everybody who kindly donated something. Also two pupils from Brownedge High School in Bamber Bridge who helped me with volunteering”.

HEARTBEAT - Charity FUN 1 Mile Run on Squash Courts 19 Oct 2014 Poster-page-1

As many of you know I am a BIG supporter of charity.

Having served in the HM Forces for over 30 years, supported St Catherine's Hospice for ten years up until 2010, and since then a number of other charities in the local community, I recently met the "HEARTBEAT" charity and said I would support them for the next few years.

They are presently located in Harris Park off Garstang Road in Preston. Next month they are moving into the old Preston North End FC Museum.

On Sunday 19th October we are holding a 1 mile fun run on the squash courts at Leyland Leisure Centre, both of which are glass backed, in support of Heartbeat.

On one court will be kids aged 7 - 15 years, on the other, adults.

The event will be divided into 30 minute sessions, five persons per court per session, (total places available per court during the day - 65).

It's not a race, purely a "FUN Race".
It's the first time any squash club in Lancashire has held an event like this.

I have managed to get Costa Coffee to sponsor the event and Helen Clitheroe, the GB runner, has kindly agreed to come down and open the event. Leyland Leisure Centre have kindly given us the courts free for the event.

Before the schools broke up for summer holidays I was invited in to speak to Year 10 pupils at Brownedge St Mary's Sports College. They are coming down to assist us, as volunteers, with the recording of the lengths (165).

The closing date for entries is Sunday 28th September.

We will be holding a photocall on court on Tuesday 2nd September, following that I will be sending out a press release.

If you would like to enter please email me.
If you would rather donate something, either yourself or friends, please email me or use the form below

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards

Leyland Girls Racketball Event-First Ever For Charity In Lancashire

By John Gibson

One of our aims at Leyland Leisure Centre is to give girls in the local community the opportunity of playing squash and racketball, something very few of them have the chance to experience whilst at school.

Last year we applied for funding to Sport England, via the Lancashire Sport Partnership, to develop and promote racketball for girls, and were successful. It provided us with the necessary support to run two six-week courses for girls from some of the local High Schools in Leyland. Due its success we are applying for more funding.

Furthermore, due to the great support we have received from schools, parents and the girls, we have set up an ‘After School Club’ on Mondays, and have included a session in our Saturday Club.

Having established a sound platform to work from, and being a big supporter of local charities, we held our first ever ‘Girls Racketball Charity Event’ for the charity I am now supporting, ‘MILES of SMILES’, on Sunday 20th April.

Despite it being held over the Easter holidays we had six girls taking part in a fun competition, and we managed to raise £200.

My thanks to Paul Heathcote for sponsoring the event along with the other two events we held over Easter; a ‘Racketball Handicap Event’ and a ‘Squash Handicap Event’.

CALLING ALL PARENTS!

If you would like your girls to develop new skills, get fit, and have a lot of fun, come along and have a go at racketball; you might want to pick up a racket too!

Last year Leyland Leisure Centre became the first squash club in the Preston, Chorley and South Ribble area to enter a ‘Junior’ Squash Team in the East Lancs Adult Summer Squash League.

Despite finishing bottom of League 2 and losing all their matches, the boys learned a great deal and their match play improved immeasurably; so much so, that when I asked them whether they wanted to play again this summer, they responded with a resounding Yes!

As well as the youngsters who played last summer we have drafted in another three boys into the squad making a total of eight boys, and next year, we may have a couple of girls ready to play in the team.

Not only are they looking forward to playing in the league again, but hopefully, with the experience gained from last summer, defeating some of their ‘adult’ opponents.

However, as with any sport, unless you have a sound foundation from which to develop, nothing happens.

And as somebody who has coached a number of sports, I know that these foundations are laid by providing sporting opportunities for youngsters during their school years, especially while at primary school.

At Leyland Leisure we start with our ‘mini squash’ courses in our local primary schools, and then develop and nurture the youngsters in our weekly classes held at the Leisure Centre.

All of the youngsters are coached by Dave Scurlock, Head Coach and Director of Youth Development at Lancashire Squash and Racketball, and myself.

Finally, I would like to thank once again the people and organisations that support our youngsters, in particular: Leyland Fox Lane Sports Club for providing food for us after the matches, and Lloyds TSB Bank for sponsoring the team’s  T-Shirts.
