English Junior Championships
The English Championships form one of three major events in the calendar. This year’s event was a great success for the Manchester Squash Academy, and our strongest event so far with most doing as expected and few doing better than their expectations.
Highlight of the event was Laurence Cull who finished 5th in the boys U13’s age group getting some big wins, also in that event Finlay finished 1st in the plate so 17th overall. In the Girls U13’s event Saran following injury battled on to finish 10th, Lauren Hall had he strongest event since joining the Academy with a 17th place finish in winning the plate! In the girls U15’s Marialena played well and learned a lot finishing 32nd. In the boys U17’s we had 4 North West players in Oscar who finished a fantastic 10th place with a great performance against Nick Wall during the event, Charlie Major came back from injury and finished a very respectable 12th place, Richard battled after a very hard first round match also playing Nick Wall and finished an eventual 22nd place, and Carlton had a tough event finishing 32nd place.
Overall a fantastic weekend.
The South Manchester Squash Club held a Squashathon this weekend for Sport Relief! The club all worked hard generating 12 solid hours of squash! There was also a great effort towards the fundraising with a grand total over £2000 raised for the great cause!

What a start to the year it has been for Lancashire juniors. Lancashire under 13 girls reached the finals of the Inter Counties for the second year in a row: congratulations to Saran Nghiem, Lucy Gibson and Charlie McCrone. They were helped on their way by a video message from the number 1 player in the world, Laura Massaro. It’s not often you get a personal message from such a great player, thanks Laura.
We did very well in the Junior Regionals, most teams containing a majority of Lancashire players. Notable results: Boys U17 came 3rd; Boys U13 came 2nd; Girls U13 came 5th. This is one of the toughest and biggest team events of the year, so well done to all who took part.

Finally, it is with great sadness that we have to report the death of Glen Ragou one of our most popular coaches and characters, Glen you will be missed.
Other news: Manchester, now have a new coach in charge: Josh Taylor. Josh has a real hands-on policy whether it’s getting youngsters at the grassroots level or juniors training in Manchester Academy, a real breath of fresh air. Josh is really getting more juniors playing and is organizing the whole set up—making a great impression on youngsters and parents as well as forging a great relationship with Lancashire.
Don’t forget the next training session at Fairways Lodge on Sunday 28 February 10am till 1 pm. If you haven’t been before it’s a chance to meet like-minded juniors who like playing and having fun.
Lee on Solent Junior Open Silver Event
This weekend saw a 9 strong group of Manchester Squash Academy players travel down to the Lee on Solent Junior Open Silver Event. With alot of strength amongst the team expectations were high for both results and, enjoyment within the trip.
This was the first time the Academy had formally gone away as a group to play in such national events. The format of the trip and the sponsorship from Tape 2 Go allowed the group to further their playing experiences and rankings in a cost effective and supportive manor with coach assistance for all matches. This is a first for an Academy such as ours in the country, giving us a step up on the opposition.
In the Boys U13’s category saw the turn of Laurence Cull, Finlay Withington, and Matthew Major. After some very close and titanic matches the group finished in 3rd, 8th, and 12th place respectively. Highlights came from Laurence in reaching the semi finals, and in strong performance against like minded players for the others.
In the Girls U13’s, we were represented by Saran Nghiem and Lauren Hall. Lauren as the youngest of the trip put in some great efforts and learned alot to eventually finish in 16th place. Saran building on her recent high form in winning the Northern Junior Open, put in another great day Saturday to reach the Semi Finals. With a slight blip in the semi’s she then finished very strongly in 3rd place. In doing this she over turned two opponents, she had recently lost to. In the Girls U15’s, Cassie showed some great squash in patches and gain alot of experience for the future finishing an eventual 12th.
In the Boys U17’s, we were represented by 3 players Tyler Smith, Carlton Oldham, and Richard Hall. In patches they all showed some great squash and play to be proud of. Eventually they finished up, 32nd, 11th, and 9th.
With alot learned and alot of fun had you can be sure this will an experience we would like to give the kids again. It’s chances like this with fun experiences and friendships made that make sport a great place for juniors to learn and, be lifetime participants in a health community.
Thanks must go to Tape 2 Go for their support and the volunteers and coaches that made it possible!
