On Sunday 20th September 2015 10 girls took part in our first ever Girls Racketball Event at Leyland for HEARTBEAT!

It’s the first time that a Junior Squash & Racketball Club in Lancashire has held such an event and that is due to the great support we have received from local High Schools, especially Balshaws C of E High School and Lostock Academy, via the sportivate funding we have received via Lancashire Sport Partnership.

Lloyds Bank of Fishergate Preston provided prizes for the girls, Leyland Leisure Centre gave us the courts free for the event, and two of the parents helped me with the scoring – Thank you.

All the girls are members of our Leyland Lions Junior Squash & Racketball Club.

Despite some of our girls not being available they managed to raise £50.

Thanks everybody!

Chris Sweeney, Director of Sport at Deanery High School, said “Our pupils have thoroughly enjoyed the coaching sessions organised by Wigan Squash Club.

The students made quick progress, learning basic rules, skills and strategies in both Squash and Racketball. This allowed them to compete in a hard fought end of course tournament.

Many thanks to Dave Scurlock and Peter Withington of Lancashire Junior Squash and Racketball for their coaching input and help with the tournament”.

Daequan Leslie’s mother didn’t go to college. But from a young age, she made it clear to him that he would. “It was always established,” Leslie said. Though he knew higher education was on the horizon, there was no road map for how he would get there. He certainly didn’t anticipate that squash – the sport, not the vegetable – would be part of the equation. Read more

On Wednesday 10th December “Leyland Lions Junior Squash & Racketball Club” held a “South Ribble Primary Schools Minisquash Event” at Leyland Leisure Centre. Great Success story thanks to so many!

It’s the first time that a Squash & Racketball Club in Lancashire and the North West of England has held such an event!

Unfortunately due to the festival season and school events Walton-le-Dale and Lever House Primary Schools were unable to take part.

The other four primary schools – Leyland Methodist, St Catherine’s, Lostock Hall Community and Woodlea took part. Four children (2 girls/2 boys) represented their schools.

Couple of quotes from the schools:

* “The Kids loved it”.

* 8 year old boy “I really enjoyed it. The afternoon was great and lots of FUN”.

My thanks to “HAYS Education” who are based in Preston for sponsoring the event. Quote “”Hays Education Recruitment Preston were proud to sponsor the South Ribble Primary Schools Minisquash Event. Working with local primary schools to promote a sporting lifestyle for young children and helping children develop sport to their full potential is so important nowadays.”

My thanks also to Balshaws C of E High School (Danielle Gladki Head of Girls PE) for allowing Jemma Gough and Emily Worthington time off to come and help Dave and myself with the marketing and scoring of the event. They were brilliant and a credit to your school Mr Haycocks – Thank You.

During September and October I held Minisquash Roadshows at each of the six schools. All the children at each school were introduced to the sport.

Minisquash (5-10 year olds) offers an ideal introduction to squash. This exciting game fits the needs of younger children and is played using specialised equipment designed to help children achieve maximum success.

As everybody appreciates Sport and Exercise is an essential part of any youngster’s lifestyle whilst growing up. Over the years various Governments have highlighted the need for our nation to get more active. Read any papers nowadays and what do you still read – health problems!

If we want a healthy nation, no use addressing the problem after children leave school, address the problem where it all starts – Primary School!

HAPPY CHRISTMAS and NEW YEAR!
